I learned to embroider when I was a kid, when everyone was really into cross stitch (remember the '80s?). Eventually, I migrated to surface embroidery, teaching myself with whatever I could get my hands on...read more

Lots of Colorful Test Stitching!

Amazon Books

Here’s a midweek update on our current project – we’re just finishing up a few more prototypes and testing our finishing ideas.

This is a continuation of the project that I showed you in this article on Fuzzy Stitches & Stitch Variety last week.

It’s always an adventure, trying to bring what you have in your mind into reality!

Embroidered Fall Project with a variety of stitches

I’m not sure what I like best about this kind of project: the variety of the stitches involved, or playing with the various colors of thread. Maybe it’s a combination of both?

Sometimes, we have to work a little harder than planned, to get the colors to work with the stitches and to still achieve the overall effect we’re after. I don’t want these little projects to look too blocky, as far as color goes. I want a gradual shifting of color along the whole surface.

Sometimes, I find that, midstream, it makes sense to try out a whole different approach to colors.

Variegated floss comes in handy, when you want to alleviate the saturation of solid color in some areas, but you don’t want to employ a bunch of different skeins of floss to do that!

I want the piece to have a bit of texture, a bit of variation in density, and good, lively color.

And beads. I want it to have beads. When I’m thinking in terms of a festive, decorative item, beads always figure into the equation somehow. It’s the sparkle, you know – that tiny hint of a twinkle here and there adds just a wee bit of life to the thing.

I’m still working on finishing materials and techniques. My goal is to make this project fun, educational, and relatively quick. To that end, I’m trying to avoid a complicated finish.

So that’s my midweek update from the stitching side of things here in the studio!

Those Leaves & that Leaf Line!

On Monday, I wrote about this autumn table runner I’m setting up to embroider. Some folks reached out to ask for a patterns I’m using.

The individual leaf is available right here on Needle ‘n Thread as a free downloadable PDF.

The line of leaves that I’ll be stitching on the short sides of the runner will be posted for members of the Needle ‘n Thread community on Patreon, in August. There’s a nice group of patterns that are available for members over there, including several designs from my ready-to-stitch sets. I’ve arranged the embroidery patterns into a Collection (see “Collections” in the main menu) to make them easier to find.

Hope your week is trotting along nicely! See you Friday!
