Raphael’s Sistine Chapel Tapestries

Amazon Books

Being a fan of Renaissance Art and certain Renaissance artists, I was really excited when a reader sent me a link to the Guardian’s little blurb on the exhibit at the Victoria & Albert in London, featuring Raphael’s Sistine Chapel Tapestries and the paintings from which they were woven.

Raphael's Sistine Chapel Tapestries

The video is an interesting look at the “cartoons” painted by Raphael as designs for tapestries and the woven tapestries created from them. Though the variance in medium achieves a fairly notable difference in the look of each piece, it is amazing to think that weavers caught the painted image so closely! What amazing skill!

You can also view Raphael’s Sistine Chapel Tapestries video online at the Guardian if you can’t see it embedded above.

Thanks heaps, Jasmine, for sending the link!
