Time is scarce these days, but here’s another little embroidery pattern – this time, a fuschia flower, in the Jacobean style.
I think this pattern is exceptionally pretty, and the embroidery stitches used to produce it can, again, be quite simple.
The edges of the petals are buttonhole stitch. The center of the petals are satin stitch (without padding), the center petal can be worked in cretan stitch or even even open fishbone. The stamens are stem stitch, topped with three French knots. The decorations inside the petals are single fly stitches.
Right now, I’m in the middle of a couple projects – trying to catch up on the silk sampler from this summer, and working on another project which, for me, is totally “different.” I’ll share it with you later! It’s somewhat bizarre, somewhat funny, and completely casual.
In the meantime, I just realized that I was missing a stitch in my Video Library of Embroidery Stitches Index! I’m going to go add it now!
This fuchsia is spectacular! Yes, it is made of common stitches yet its grace and beauty is evident even in the black and white pattern. New to your site/blog, Miss Colbert, I am thrilled to have started a doodle-cloth and created a few stitches to remind myself what peace comes with routine time handling my Needle ‘N Thread. Thank you for generously sharing useful and rewarding knowledge. Beulah
I love everything about your work – except you don’t do kits! Having just learnt how to do short/long stitch to an acceptable level I was looking for suitable patterns/kits to do a few more before experimenting on other types of embroidery. I enjoy embroidery but do others just do a variety as and when or do they develop a particular liking for one particular type and concentrate on that? I look forward to hearing from you.
Hi, Deirdre – my focus is pretty much all types of surface embroidery, and I concentrate on different techniques, depending on the projects I’m working on. If you’re looking for kits for long and short stitch, I’d suggest looking up Trish Burr’s embroidery website. She has lovely long and short stitch kits. They’re coming from South Africa, but they’re worth the wait! Also, you could look up Tanja Berlin – she’s out of Canada, and also offers some really nice thread painting (long and short stitch) kits. I hope that helps!
hello i was wondering which stitch is used for the bottom leaf and why there is two centre petals? love this piece !!
