Time to do some organizing! Here on Needle ‘n Thread, whenever I work a major hand embroidery project all the way through and write about it, I like categorize and index the whole project so that all the articles about it are easy to find.
Last week, I started the Mission Rose Project, and this is the index for it. Here’s where you’ll find all the links for the project, in the order in which they appear on the website. As each new progress report appears on Needle ‘n Thread, I’ll link it up here.
You’ll find the main link for the Mission Rose project index under Tips & Techniques in the main menu at the top of the website here. That’s also where you can find all the other lists of other projects I’ve worked through step-by-step and written about.

This will be great.
Do you have an index for the previous goldwork piece that was a commissioned piece? I forget the name of it.
Hi, Mary – it was the Marian Medallion. It’s also listed under Tips & Techniques. In fact, it’s also the main picture on the home page of the site, right now. I have to change that one of these days….! ~MC
Hi Mary
Lovely pattern and thank you for sharing it. I was thinking of stitching it along with you and was wondering if you would be listing the threads soon. Where I live, everything has to be ordered from away so time will be needed to source and receive the threads. I am really looking forward to starting this piece. Thank you again for sharing.
Hi, JT – Yes, I’ll be listing some of the threads soon. The difficulty with listing the threads with any certitude is that on these projects that unfold on the website, I work on a trial-and-error basis. That way, I can show my thought processes behind changing my mind, or I can show definite mistakes and how to correct them, and so forth. So, while I have a starting palette of threads, I can’t guarantee that I’ll actually use them all, or that they won’t change a little bit – adding new ones, taking others out. But I’ll be writing about the ones I’ve selected so far in an upcoming post. ~MC
Dear Mary
Thanks for taking the time to organise an index on the mission rose. I can’t wait to see how you are going to create it and I’m looking forward with anticipation to the development of this needlework project.
Regards Anita Simmance
Hi Mary, I love the new project! I am also starting a new project on silk dupioni using DMC rayon embroidery threads, some silk, and some metalics. I am making a book cover for a small photo album using one of the french monograms I found online at antiquepatternlibrary.org. Would you still recommend that I use another fabric to back it. This is my first project with silk and look forward to your step by step progress to help me through mine.
In framing up article, you said, “With the piece framed up, you might be tempted to think it’s ready for stitching, but it’s not – so next time, we’ll cover one more step in preparing this piece for the actual embroidery.”
Where is that last step located? Inquiring minds want to know!
Hi, Bev. “Next time” – meaning, in the next article…! 🙂
Hi Mary, Did you you mention the size of this piece? It is beautiful and it will be fun to watch as it progresses. Thank you for sharing!
Hi, Linda – Yes, it’s mentioned in the earlier posts on the whole process. You can find all the previous articles here: https://needlenthread.wpengine.com/2013/04/mission-rose-in-silk-gold-embroidery-project-index.html It’s approximately 7.5″ x 4″.

thing 1 thing 2 you are so right no wonder I love following you here and on pinterest and Facebook. I have learnt so much from you. Things that I already did but now know why .Things I needed improving on, courage to try new stitches . Concentration !Once you put it on paper it mades so much sense . Even my knitting stitches are off on somedays and now I all most want to redo some of my stitching on my angel. Notice I said ALL MOST . Thank you for sharing you thoughts with us everyday .

Dear Mary,
The leaves look really great, and I am waiting to see them when they finish. I have always loved the long and short stitches and hope I can master them. My mother also had a very good hand with this stitch, and your leaves remind me so much of her. I would post you a picture, but haven’t tried my hand at uploading pictures:( Anyway her work is back in India and I shall surely get it the next time as we will be more in the US now.
Thanks for providing a feast for the eyes!
Mary,
I just want to tell you how much I enjoy the beauty of what you do, and thank you for sharing your talent. I am not an embroiderer, but I am entralled with your magnificent embroidery. Thank you so much.
Mary,
I am wondering how to obtain the mission rose project in full. Do you sell it or do you have a link we can print it off. How do I get it? I’m not finding it and wondering if it is in one of the books
Hi, Katherine – The Mission Rose (in full) isn’t completed yet. I’m working it out step by step as I go here on the website. You’re welcome to follow along with it, to work ahead on it, or to wait a while until I get each part worked out and then follow the project on the website – but it isn’t actually available as a finished project because I’m just now working through it myself. The reason I’m doing it this way is to show how the project develops and to give any stitching tips along the way, or show how to fix things when mistakes are made, and so forth. You can find the pattern here under the index, as well as thread choices and so forth (though I may very well make some alterations in the threads as I go….) ~MC
Seem to have a broken link from 2 July post.
RE: The blue applique.
Yes!
Perfect.
Not sure why you think the blue silk will be a mistake but I think it will be lovely and what I believe you are saying you are going to do will work. Go for it.
I love what you have going so far.
Hello! I know this is kind of off topic but I was wondering if you knew where I could find a
captcha plugin for my comment form? I’m using the same blog platform as yours and I’m having problems finding one?
Thanks a lot!
hi mary, why did you do this? are you donating it to a church?
Why did I do this project? Because I had an idea and wanted to pursue it as a project to work through on the website here. I’m going to frame it when it’s finished. It’s not a religious piece. Just decorative!
Hello Mary, just to let you know. Your last post “Change of Plans” really is a cliff hanger for me. I am so thrilled about what you will do next. I love your daily newsletter! Best regards
Conny
I am so glad you are going to ignore the negative comments because I find I look forward everyday to your comments, instructions, your beautiful work and the reviews of everything pertaining to this wonderful craft. Thank you sooooooo much Mary, you are a wonder. The mission rose project is amazing and I am working along with you. I just hope mine turns out as nice as yours.
I love your Mission Rose series; I don’t care what others have said! It has been anything but boring and I don’t believe that “we are tired of it”. If so, I am not part of “we”. Thank you so much for your work on this project, and I LOVE the way it is looking. I am learning so much! I love your site, Mary, and I want to continue to be a small part of it, even though I am still not the embroiderer I want to be.
Thank you so much!
Dawn Rodgers
The gold vermicelli over the blue is beautiful! Thanks for going into detail about the stitching with the gold thread. I’ve been wanting to use a really “liquid-y” gold thread but wasn’t sure I was experienced enough as an embroiderer. It’s so beautiful though that I may just plunge in while relying on your newsletters and the great info on goldwork.
Hi, I love your works. Really they are very beautiful. I’d like to show how I do that, meybe through a video. God bless you for this pretty art.
I love this project…just trying to find a way to organize all the tips, materials and process you’ve been going thru…will you have this available in one single project? Thanks again …its a lovely piece!
Hi, Gloria – there’s a link to the project index at the end of the article above. In the project index, you’ll find all the articles relating to the project listed in chronological order, for easy access. Here’s the direct link to that index again: https://needlenthread.wpengine.com/2013/04/mission-rose-in-silk-gold-embroidery-project-index.html
I know a lot of readers subscribe to the daily email (the subscription box is in the top right here on the website), so that they can easily print any articles that they find useful and want to keep. But at this point, even if you subscribe, you won’t receive the past articles on the project – you’ll find those in the index, though.
Hope that helps!
MC
Mornin Mary, bless you for being so organized! and thank you for your explanation regarding lacing up a slate frame you gave me the other day. I ended up using tape as my linen is a fragile 50ct, transferred the design of the Tudor Rose and am ready to go. I’ve been following your Mission Rose piece carefully as it has some elements to it that I will be using in my piece. Got my Vera Wang furry slippers on, a nice cuppa and ready to sit in my cozy chair and stitch this cold morning away. Thank you again, may your day be a successful one
I must let you now how much I appreciate your web site and the email updates. So much information and so inspiring – thank you.

I am looking for some information on old thread.
I have some cord that says,
“Apollo cordonnet “edelfroi

jndonminren
I haven’t been able to find anything on the internet…can you help?
I inherited the box of threads and am using some of them to finish off a needlepoint piece.
thanks!
Nancy
Have you used all the Apollo Cordonet threads??? I am trying to complete an embroidery project that my mother started in the 1930s and have been hunting high and low for these threads…. so if you have any left I’d be really interested!
You did a fantastic job, it is just beautiful. Have you considering making a kit for this that we could purchase?
Wow, Mary, I love it! I’ve been watching the progress of this piece and at times I wondered at some of what I saw until, of course, the next email installment with new pictures and a better understanding. I am in awe of your talent!! Beautiful!!
Oh Mary! I agree about the frame…..and it is inexcusable that there are ripples and that the gold was bent…..etc. keep searching for another framer? Ask if they have ever framed needlework.
How can such a talented craftsperson as yourself be so NICE and still share the best information to help a struggling new sewist like me. Thank You so much
Dear Mary……u r just excellent. ..
Mary, would this piece work for a bible cover?
Thank you
Sandra
It’s a bit narrow and long – only 4″ wide.
Dear Marie! I’ve been sitting here reading your website for hours. This is the best site about embroidery! I never embroidered with gold, it seemed to me that it is very scary… Now I know that I will do it! I am very grateful to you for all the information you share with us, it is so generous and so interesting! Thank you very much, you inspired me for a new one! With gratitude, Olga.
I would like to join your group on Facebook. Love your website.
Love your Mission Rose!
Do you have a kit available for stitching it?
Hi, Linda, No, I’m afraid don’t have a kit for the Mission Rose project. I created it before I started kitting projects, and it was made with some supplies that would be difficult for me to source.
