    Every Christmas, several of us at church get together to learn a four-part harmony carol to perform at our Carols by Candlelight service, and although “Mary did you know” and “Joseph’s lullaby” perhaps get the biggest reaction from the congregation, my own favourite is “O Holy Night”. I’m particularly fond of a version I saw some years ago, where clever video editing allowed the grown-up Aled Jones (who became famous as a boy soprano singing, among other things, Walking In The Air, though not in the actual Snowman film) to sing this carol as a duet with his younger self.

I remember singing it on Christmas Eve in my nurses uniform with my cloak turned red side out by candlelight in the hospital wards and I remember singing with my children at midnight mass on Christmas Eve. My parents had old reel to reel music tapes when I was growing up and we listened to Andy Williams, Connie Francis, Johnny Mathis, Harry Belafonte. Classics. As an adult, I began looking for CD’s of what I remembered listing to as a child. I found an Andy Williams Christmas CD, not knowing if it was the correct one. I put it in the player and pressed play. From the very first notes of “White Christmas”, I knew it was the right one because I instantly had tears running down my face. I was 8 years old again in my parents living room, with the Christmas tree lights glowing and the fireplace warming us. It’s amazing what can bring back good memories like that

     Like you, I have many favorite pieces of music for Christmas. I was brought up in a household that loved classical music so many of those are very nostalgic, but the one piece of Christmas music I love the best is a pop hit by Mariah Carrey that plays at the end of the movie “Love Actually”. It plays while running the credits and showing people at the airport thrilled to be greeting family and friends who have just arrived. It makes me quite teary every time to see the love and joy reflected in the reunions and the sound of the song pops those images in my mind instantly. What a treat!

442. Hard for me to say as well but Feliz Navidad has a special place in my heart. My father struggled with the Spanish lyrics every year and it came out Fleece Snobby Knob. It became a joke between us till his death at Christmas time in 2008. We’d call each other to be the first to hear it on the radio and hold the phone up so the other could hear.
     The day of his funeral I put a Feliz Navidad ornament that I’d gotten him in his casket with him. As we left the funeral home for the cemetery my husband turned on the radio in the car and you can guess what was just starting to play!

     Next fave is Handel’s Messiah, Christmas section (including Hallelujah Chorus and the Great Amen) – again, not one tune! So wonderful to perform surrounded by musician friends and singers – As a ‘cellist, the male voice recitatives really resonate.
     So I reach back again to preschool days… my favorite hymn, with tune by a student of Mendelssohn’s: It Came Upon A Midnight Clear. So lovely! and the words are truly evocative of our hope in Christ: “And the whole world give back the song
     Which now the angels sing.”

891. My favourite Christmas song is “Silent Night” by the Vienna Boys Choir. I was born in Vienna and we would celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve as a family living in New Zealand. My parents would wrap the presents, prepare the open sandwiches with our help and put out the Christmas biscuits that we had helped to bake. They would then decorate the Christmas tree with lights and small candles and light candles around the room. They would place the presents under the tree. Then they would put the Vienna Boys Choir record on the record player and we would hear the tinkling bells at the start of the song as we waited outside the door with our presents and our eager anticipation. As soon as the first notes were sung, the door would open and we would be allowed into the magical space of Christmas.
     A bit more difficult in the Southern Hemisphere to keep that wintery cosy feel as it was summer then. But we loved it growing up. That song brings back those memories.

     As a (lutheran) priest, I am blessed to lead the mass with a (lutheran) convent in my country parish. There lives some 20 S:t Mary’s Daughters. The whole service is a capella. When the sisters sing this hymn under the vaults in the the church from the 1300th century, it´s like the sound of heaven!

It’s a song that brings tears to my eyes whenever I hear it – tears of joy, sadness and hope for the future. Merry Christmas everyone!

1025. My favorite Christmas song is Christmas for Cowboys. It’s a song that a doctor and I sang at a hospital Christmas Party. Employee children were there also. When we began to sing the more HO HO Ho-type of songs, the kids came and sat down on the floor in front of us. We encouraged them to sing the chorus of each song. It is a great memory. It was the only time we ever performed to a live audience. Just a Critical Care RN and a General Practitioner who enjoyed playing the guitar.

1028. Glad you asked—Ukrainian Bell Carol tops my “favorites” list! After a chance encounter on the internet earlier this year, I discovered it was written by Mykola Leontovych. Originally called “Shcerdryk” (The Little Swallow), it dates from the early 1900’s & was a New Year song based on a Ukrainian folk chant. It became known as “Carol of the Bells” after English lyrics were added by an American, Peter Wilhousky, in the 1930’s. There are many interesting recordings (traditional, rock, techno & beyond!) online, but the one that blew my mind was Gregg Miner’s version played on Banduras & Balalaikas (plucked instruments of Ukraine & Russia). It is hauntingly beautiful without any words.

1049. Being the daughter of the choir director at our church, enjoying 25 years of Christmas choir music as a result, I think we sang all the traditional hymns and carols thru the years. But perhaps my favorite of all was singing together as a family while we decorated our tree. My favorite song was “Nebo I Zemla” in Slavish. The words translate to roughly “heaven and earth today are rejoicing for Christ is born, God incarnate”. My mother had sung it as a child growing up in the Byzantine Catholic Church. My parents are gone now, but the sweet memories are still there as I sing decorating our tree.

While I love many different Christmas carols, this one holds a special place in my heart because of an experience I had while I was an officer cadet at the Royal Military College of Canada. I was a member of the choir and had volunteered to go and sing at a local senior’s home. When we were singing on the memory care floor, some of the residents didn’t seem particularly aware that we were there, including one older lady in a wheelchair. However, when we sang a verse of O Come All Ye Faithful in Latin, she perked up slightly and then joined in. For a brief moment, the music sung in a language from her youth reached a place in her brain that hadn’t been stolen by illness. She sang only part of the one verse and then seemed to fade out again. The song now reminds me of the power of music and the beauty of that moment of connection.

1183. I love all the traditional Christmas hymns, esp. sung at the candlelight service on Christmas Eve. But lately I like to sing Tish Hinojosa’s song to her Xmas tree—“Arbolito” (she also has an English version). Also, “Nanita, Nana” by her is a beautiful lullaby for the baby Jesus—I used to sing my daughter to sleep with it when she was a baby. I grew up on the Mexican border, so the songs resonate with a lot of memories.
